It started with one of those late-night thoughts that refused to die: What if American Graffiti had been filmed with Universal Monsters and a grindhouse horror director calling the shots?

In our version, Dr. Frankenstein’s wretched creature became The Wretch, the greaser we always imagined him to be. We handed the idea to our artist and told him to make it look like the dead had taken over the boulevard. The Wretch is posted against a black ’55 Chevy inspired by the one Harrison Ford drove as Bob Falfa. He’s hunting down Milner for the race that would finally settle who owns the night. Milner’s yellow ’32 Ford, Steve’s white ’58 Impala and Toad’s ’59 Vespa all earned their spots outside the Monster Malt Shop.

Look closer and the nightmare gets even worse. “Brainburgers and Flies” buzzes in sickly neon, our Bad Moon werewolf claws through the graveyard, and LIVE FAST, DIE UGLY delivers the only warning this town is going to get. The Wretch stands there with slicked-back hair, bolts jutting from both sides of his neck, thick staples holding his head and arms in place and blood covering his once-white tank. “Reborn” is inked across his cheek, Mary Shelley stretches across his chest, and Dr. Frankenstein is blasted down his forearm. Lightning bolts and artwork from our Mad Scientist illustration are buried among the rest of his ink.

We printed the entire scene in high resolution across the back of a sinister black tee, letting the sickly greens, glowing signs, polished chrome and fine tattoos crawl out of the darkness. The front stays clean with a coordinating green-and-white HALES oval hit. We buried more than a few Easter eggs in this one. How many can you dig up?
